The date of the '06/'07 academic year fair is Friday, March 9, 2007 at WPI.

At the present time (10-04-06) it is not known whether or not a formal "Science Fair" will be held at Bromfield this academic year.  However, thinking optimistically, it seems prudent to plan for one in that the "Fair" is such a unique part of a student's science education.  As such a portion of your PSII grade for '06-'07 (i.e. 10% thereof) has been allocated relative to your performance on a "Science Project" which will provide for a letter grade in each of the four grading quarters.   Participation in the "Science Project" is required for "Honors" sections and is optional for the "CP" Sections.

There are two broad categories of eligible projects:

(1) A bona fide new experiment of Physics - The execution of which follows all the protocols of the Massachusetts State Science Fair requirements.

(2) A "How Things Work" project - Somewhat separate rules will apply - though there will be certain shared milestone target dates (with the hopeful "Science Fair" participants of (1) above).

It is suggested, for all students, that Option (1) be selected in that it is "true science" and more tailored to what Mr. Holt. Mr. Clarke and the rest of the Science Department have attempted to train you for over the years.  Further, even if Bromfield doesn't hold a fair this year - if you do a great job - and I'm sure you will - you'll be eligible for entry in the Worcester Regional event and follow-on "finals" depending on how you fare with the competition.

Towards ensuring an environment for the best possible results we’ll do a number of things throughout the year to date as follows:

  • Limited homework assignments on weekends to allow for students to work their project.
  • Handing out of milestone requirements at the outset in October and posting this web page featuring these and other fair requirements.
  • Requiring a consultant be named for all projects.
  • Log-book check in late October.
  • Computer lab class in early October reviewing www.SciFair.com regulatory requirements.
  • Showing of "Discovery" video on the 2005 fair featuring the spoils of success.
  • Receiving three fair exemplar displays from the Mass Academy for student review.
  • Requirement for a an oral & written progress report prior to the holiday break.
  • Requirement that consultant contact info (email) be provided to me.
  • Requirement that any changes in project scope be submitted by consultant.
  • Mock judging of the three Mass Academy exemplars using a MA Science Fair Committee judging rubric.
